Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the stress of mothers with chronically ill children and how they cope with them.

Method: One hundreds and five mothers from the pediatric wards of two medical centers in D city participated. Data collection was performed by researchers who helped mothers to fill out questionnaires.

Result: Results showed that stress of mothers was a moderate degree and coping skill was also in moderate degree. Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that mother¡¯s perception of child¡¯s condition, frequency of hospitalization, monthly income and diagnosis were predictors of a mother¡¯s stress which accounted for 34% of total variance of stress.

Conclusion: Both stress & coping skill of mothers were a moderate degree. Mothers¡¯ stress who took care of chronically ill children were influenced by economic difficulty, secverity of disease. Most mothers showed tendency to take positive views to ease their stress.
